What the houses are
The zodiac signs are fixed in the sky; the houses are fixed to the place where you stood. The horizon and the meridian at your birth split the sky into four quarters, and each quarter is split into three houses. In astrology each house is an area of life: the second money and possessions, the seventh partners, the tenth career, and so on.
House systems disagree on how to split the quarters. Placidus, the most used in English-speaking astrology, divides the time each degree takes to rise. Whole Sign gives each house one whole sign, starting with the rising sign. Equal counts thirty degrees from the Ascendant. Switch between them in the form.
Houses need the exact time; four minutes move every cusp about a degree. Above about 66 degrees latitude Placidus cannot be drawn, so Whole Sign is used.

How this is calculated
Placidus: for houses 11, 12, 2 and 3 the right ascension is iterated until the ecliptic point's meridian distance is the required fraction (1/3 or 2/3) of its diurnal or nocturnal semi-arc; houses 4 to 9 are opposite. Whole Sign: 0 degrees of the rising sign, then each sign. Equal: the Ascendant plus 30 degrees a house. Planets are placed by longitude between cusps.
