What Black Moon Lilith is

Black Moon Lilith is a point, not a body. The Moon's orbit is an ellipse, and Lilith marks its far end, the apogee, where the Moon is farthest from Earth. Astrologers named it after a figure of independence and refusal, and read its sign as the part of you that will not be tamed or made polite.

The apogee is pushed around by the Sun, so there are several ways to place it. Mean Lilith smooths that motion into a steady drift of about forty degrees a year. Other versions, called true or osculating Lilith, can be thirty degrees away. This calculator shows mean Lilith only and says so on every result.

We compute it ourselves from the published lunar formulas, because the ephemeris library does not include it. A birth date is enough; time and place are used only if you give them.
