What a Saturn return is

Saturn takes about 29 and a half years to go around the zodiac. Your Saturn return is the time it comes back to the exact degree it occupied when you were born, first around age 29, again near 58 and, for some, near 87. Astrology treats the first return as a coming-of-age: a time of tests, decisions and taking full responsibility for your life.

Because Saturn appears to move backward for part of each year, it often crosses your natal degree three times over about a year: forward, back, then forward again. The result lists every pass, so you can see the whole window rather than a single date.

The birth date is enough; Saturn moves too slowly for the time to matter. The dates are found to the minute in UTC. Astrologers usually say the return is felt from the time Saturn enters your natal sign.

Worked examples

  1. Born 1990-03-05: natal Saturn at 22°31′ Capricorn, first exact return on 2020-01-10 at age 29.9, a single pass.
  2. Born 1985-11-29 in London: Saturn in Sagittarius, crossed in 3 passes, the first on 2015-01-07.
  3. Born 1962-04-15 in São Paulo: first return 1992-02-08

How this is calculated

Natal Saturn = apparent geocentric ecliptic longitude of date at birth (astronomy-engine). Saturn's longitude is sampled every 5 days from age 24 to 33, 53 to 62 and 82 to 91 (up to 2100); each crossing of the natal value is found by bisection to under a minute and listed, direct or retrograde.
